Kedarkantha, one day at a time

Day 1: Sankri village

Day 1 · 1,950 m

Where the road runs out

Sankri village · Drive from Dehradun · 7 hrs

Slate roofs, woodsmoke and apple orchards at the edge of Govind National Park. Over a slow dinner your trek leader walks you through the week, and twelve strangers start becoming a team.

Day 2: Juda ka Talab

Day 2 · 2,780 m

Into the deodar

Juda ka Talab · 4 km · 5 hrs

The trail climbs through pine, oak and rhododendron to a small lake held in the forest. Somewhere along the way the phone signal quietly gives up, and so do your shoulders.

Day 3: Kedarkantha base

Day 3 · 3,430 m

The range reveals itself

Kedarkantha base · 4 km · 4 hrs

The trees thin into open meadow and, all at once, the horizon fills with peaks: Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak. Camp tonight has the best view you'll ever have from a sleeping bag.

Day 4: Kedarkantha peak

Day 4 · 3,810 m

Summit at first light

Kedarkantha peak · 6 km · 9 hrs

A 3 a.m. start, a line of headlamps up the snow, and then the sun breaks over a sea of cloud. For a few minutes, nobody says a word.

Day 5: Hargaon camp

Day 5 · 3,100 m

Firelight and stories

Hargaon camp · 5 km · 4 hrs

Easy miles down through the snowline to one last night under canvas. Hot halwa from the camp kitchen, a fire, and stories that are already getting taller.

Day 6: Sankri village

Day 6 · 1,950 m

Back to signal, changed

Sankri village · 6 km · 4 hrs

The notifications return all at once. Somehow, none of them feel quite as urgent as they did a week ago.
