Brahmatal trek, Uttarakhand

A frozen lake with Trishul and Nanda Ghunti for company.

Two frozen lakes, oak forest heavy with snow and a ridge walk where Trishul fills half the sky. The quieter cousin of Kedarkantha, and many say the prettier one.

Brahmatal, one day at a time

Day 1: Lohajung

Day 1 · 2,300 m

A village above the clouds

Lohajung · Drive from Kathgodam · 10 hrs

A long, winding drive through Kumaon ends in a hamlet of tin roofs and tea stalls. Mt. Nanda Ghunti shows itself just before dark, a small promise of the days ahead.

Day 2: Bekaltal

Day 2 · 2,682 m

Through the oak to Bekaltal

Bekaltal · 6 km · 5 hrs

Moss-hung oak and rhododendron, then a still, dark lake in a clearing. The forest is so quiet here you can hear snow slipping off the branches.

Day 3: Tilandi

Day 3 · 3,250 m

Onto the ridge

Tilandi · 5 km · 5 hrs

The trees fall away and the ridge opens up: Trishul and Nanda Ghunti stand close enough to count their couloirs. Tonight's camp sits on the snowline.

Day 4: Brahmatal summit

Day 4 · 3,734 m

The frozen lake

Brahmatal summit · 8 km · 8 hrs

Up to the top for sunrise over the Garhwal and Kumaon ranges, then down to Brahmatal itself, frozen solid and ringed by snow.

Day 5: Gujrari bugyal

Day 5 · 3,100 m

Down through Jhandi

Gujrari bugyal · 7 km · 5 hrs

A gentle descent over open meadow with the whole route laid out behind you. The last night under canvas is always the loudest one.

Day 6: Lohajung

Day 6 · 2,300 m

Back to Lohajung

Lohajung · 6 km · 4 hrs

Tea at the same stall where it all began, and a long look back up the hill you just came down.
