Har Ki Dun, Uttarakhand

Har Ki Dun trek, Uttarakhand

A cradle-shaped valley of thousand-year-old villages and wooden temples.

Older than any trail map, this is a walk through living history: carved wooden houses, temples to Duryodhana, and a valley at the end that looks straight up at Swargarohini.

Har Ki Dun, one day at a time

Day 1: Sankri

Day 1 · 1,950 m

Into Govind National Park

Sankri · Drive from Dehradun · 8 hrs

The road follows the Tons river into the park. Sankri is all walnut trees and woodsmoke, and the last place for a while with anything like a shop.

Day 2: Pauni Garaat

Day 2 · 2,500 m

Along the Supin

Pauni Garaat · Drive 1 hr · walk 10 km

A drive to Taluka, then a long, easy day along the Supin river through walnut and chestnut, past water mills still grinding flour.

Day 3: Kalkattiyadhar

Day 3 · 3,000 m

The old villages

Kalkattiyadhar · 8 km · 6 hrs

Osla and Gangad: carved wooden houses stacked up the hillside, terraced fields of red rice, and a temple that has stood here for longer than anyone can remember.

Day 4: Har Ki Dun

Day 4 · 3,566 m

The valley of the gods

Har Ki Dun · 6 km · 5 hrs

The valley opens like cupped hands, with Swargarohini rising at the far end. Legend says the Pandavas walked this way to heaven. It's easy to see why.

Day 5: Marinda Tal

Day 5 · 3,400 m

A day to wander

Marinda Tal · 6 km · 4 hrs

No packing, no schedule. Walk up towards Jaundhar glacier, sit by the lake at Marinda, or just lie in the grass and watch the clouds move over the ridge.

Day 6: Kalkattiyadhar

Day 6 · 3,000 m

Back through Osla

Kalkattiyadhar · 10 km · 6 hrs

Retracing your steps in reverse light. The village children recognise you now and wave from the rooftops.

Day 7: Sankri

Day 7 · 1,950 m

The road home

Sankri · 12 km · drive 1 hr

Down the Supin one last time to Taluka and the jeeps. Dinner in Sankri tastes better than any restaurant you know.
